Maker of the Month - June - Lucy Rayner

June 4, 2025 Natalie Kelly

How would you describe what you do?
I make hand-thrown homeware, specifically vases. Some functional, some are less so and more ornamental.

How did you get started in art/design?
I pursued graphic design in school and in college. Prior to ceramics, I leaned towards working with pencil and watercolour in my personal work. I didn’t start ceramics until 2 years ago when I joined the Makerspace.

What makes your work and/or process unique?
I think every potter’s process and work is unique. If I could describe my process, I would say it’s a bit like improvised jazz - I sit at the wheel and I let my hands and body make what they want to make, with only a rough idea of what form I will end up with.

What tips would you give to someone interested in starting what you do?
Be patient with yourself. Don’t be afraid to fail repeatedly.

What made you feel like, “yes this is something I want in my life?”
The first time I sat at the wheel I was amazed at how much of a whole-body experience it was. You must be so focused on what you’re doing. It’s almost a state of mindfulness for me. I really enjoy that feeling of not being able to think of anything else aside from your body and the clay.

If you have creative block where do you get inspiration?
Music really inspires me. I often make playlists for my walk into the studio, and I have specific albums that I love to throw to.

Where do you see yourself in the future with this journey?
I would love to further my skills and knowledge to a point where I could teach ceramics and share my passion for it. I can’t imagine ever stepping away from the wheel, there’s so much to learn and I look forward to spending many years improving my craft.

Is there another artist/maker that you admire?
My pottery hero is Eric Landon. His mastery of the wheel is just incredible and the forms he creates are so beautiful.

Any exciting events/projects/experiences soon?
Watch this space! Nothing to announce yet, but I am starting to put feelers out for more places that I can share my work.

Why is Colchester Makerspace important to you/your work?
It provides a dedicated space for creatives to come and do exactly that - create. It’s got this fantastic energy in there, like a little oasis in the heart of Colchester. I’m so grateful to it.

What is your favourite thing about Colchester Makerspace?
The people.
