Maker of the Month - May - James Lejeune

May 1, 2025 Natalie Kelly

How would you describe what you do?
What I do varies daily, depending on whether I have a commission, preparing for a class, or printing. To earn a living as a creative, sometimes it pays to be as versatile as possible.

How did you get started in art/design?
I guess I got started in art and design after taking my illustration degree, it made me remember how much I liked drawing and painting.

What makes your work and/or process unique?
What makes my art different is the same as any other artist: personal development and style, coupled with personal inspiration and research.

What tips would you give to someone interested in starting what you do?
To pick one to three things you like and stick to them. It’s good to be versatile, but it doesn’t work for everything, and, if possible, it’s better to focus on getting good at something than being okay at everything.

What made you feel like, “yes this is something I want in my life?”
I enjoy drawing and making imagery in many ways; as a therapy and a way to both express myself and keep my mind young. My imagination can roam free.

If you have creative block where do you get inspiration?
When I have a bit of a block, I usually turn to films and books for inspiration or go out to nature to relax and think.

Where do you see yourself in the future with this journey? Do you want it to be long term?
As long as I can continue making art in the future, I will be happy. I would love to do more book illustrations though and maybe design assets for games and animation. Hopefully, this is a long-term journey, but, for whatever reason, I will always do it for relaxation.

Is there another artist/maker that you admire?
Another maker I admire is maybe Ella Giddings. I always like the way her very detailed ceramic works turn out.

Any exciting events/projects/experiences soon?
At the moment, I am working on an illustration for the East London Waterworks, which is a charity organisation that is turning grey/brown field sites into eco-friendly habitats and public spaces.

Why is Colchester Makerspace important to you/your work?
The Makerspace is important as a creative hub, a safe space to work and also useful for the equipment available.

What is your favourite thing about Colchester Makerspace?
That it’s always busy. There is usually something different being made or someone new to talk to.

Some of James’s pieces will be on display and available to buy from Tuesday 6th May - next door in Te neighbouring restaurant Patch. Please ensure you are onsite when placing order. To see more of his work - take a look at the socials below:
