Introduction to Kiln Firing - Two Sessions
A short, two-part course to introduce the technical aspects of firing ceramics in an electrical kiln.
Session 1: A 2hr online class (link details will be sent out to your before the event via email)
Session 2: A 1.5hr practical class at the Makerspace
YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE BOTH ELEMENTS TO BE GRANTED SELF SERVE ACCESS TO USE OUR KILNS.
What Will Be Covered:
How a kiln works - what you need to know about variations in control systems
Understanding our kiln booking processes
Packing a kiln - including shelf prep and maintenance)
Designing your firing program/cycle
What happens in a kiln to your work - troubleshooting issues
Basic maintenance and safety - A chance to ask questions about any specific firing issues
This course will suit both beginners and more experienced makers who want to know more about firings and kiln use.
Led by Peter Jones, a ceramic artist who has run his own studio for over 26 years. He has exhibited widely and is currently an associate artist for the British ceramics biennial, and consults and assist on many technical aspects of ceramics for artists and organisations. He was senior technician at Colchester Art school and regularly taught on the 3D Design and Craft Degree.
