Member FAQs
Below is a list of common questions members often ask us.
+ How much will it cost to fire my work??
There are lots of things to take into consideration when working out the costs of firings.
The main drivers for us are to offer as much a value for money service as possible while covering our ongoing and maintenance costs, as well as keeping a manageable and simple process for pricing.
You can see the costs of different firing options online here: https://bit.ly/3kNzvfC
Please note we already added some surcharges for damage or kiln mismanagement – these are listed on the kiln request forms.
+ Is it more expensive to fire the kiln for glaze firing?
Yes, higher temperatures use more energy and ware elements faster.
+ What clay is available to purchase at the Makerspace?
We stock a limited range of clay, a basic earthenware terracotta and a buff grogged stoneware – we exclusively use potclays as a supplier – we can help arrange the supply of other clays from potclays (saving delivery fee) unfortunately as an organisation we cannot afford to stock a broad range of clays at the moment.
+ I am new to pottery, could someone teach me how to use the wheel when I come in to use the space?
Getting taught sessions is not covered by your membership fee. You can get some support from the studio technician on days they are in through prior arrangement. Alternatively you could take a throwing course that we run and our discounted to members (this would give you the best start)- you also have the support of other members, use the pottery whats app channel to see if another member is able to give you some time and guidance.
+ What can you fire in the kilns? Can you fire glass?
We really do not want people to fire anything apart from clay in the kilns and only use materials that are specifically designed for that purpose such a kanthal wire support for beads for example.
Glass can be fired in the kiln but glass needs to have a very specific firing cycle that is not really compatible with clay firing so it would have to be fired on its own in a kiln, and costs would have to be specifically worked out
+ What is the highest temperature your kilns will fire to?
1260c
+ What is the gate code?
Please send
+ I am a Lite user (8 hours use per week). If I only use the space for 6 hours one week, can I carry that over to use the space an extra 2 hours the following week?
Yes, as long as there is a reasonable balance to used hours ie not using 32 hours in one week.
+ Can I bring a friend/family member along to show them the space? They are interested in becoming a member?
During the current situation and added Covid security we ask members not to bring family or friends to the maker space. If you have someone who is interested in becoming a member please let us know and then we can arrange a visit.
