Maker of the Month: Mathew Day →

October 8, 2023 Minahil Malik

I have been potting on and off for the last 43 years. I studied ceramics in my hometown in Rovaniemi, Finnis Lapland. After graduating I have been doing pottery as a business and teaching. I was running pottery classes as therapy at the Lakes psychiatric hospital for 22 years which I enjoyed a lot.

I am a visual designer and illustrator who likes to explore different ways to express myself. What I do is still work-in-progress. I feel I am still on the path to where I want it to be. Most of my personal projects have been about documenting everyday life and experiences. I draw cartoons, run workshops and art classes, install other people's art in galleries, play bass guitar, follow the town, cook adequately, occasionally put on gigs and events and sometimes screen print stuff.

I’d say I’m finding my way with clay, learning and having fun along the way. Quite often I don’t know when I sit down what will come out, and as they say, I let the clay speak and my fingers follow.

Artist Fiona Josephs.

I started as soon as I could hold a pencil. I did my first drawing at two after my first vaccine of a trolley with a kidney bowl. I copied a picture in a book and the teacher took it around the whole school at primary school.
