Maker of the Month - August - Kieran Campbell

How would you describe what you do?
I create ceramic candles, functional and non-functional pieces using stoneware. Athough I am now delving into the world of porcelain.

How did you get started in art/design?
I only recently started getting into art/design within that last 2 years. We did a team-building day with work at the Makerspace and as soon as I played around with clay I was hooked.

What makes your work and/or process unique?
A lot of my work now is inspired by the world around me, mainly through glazing.

What tips would you give to someone interested in starting what you do?
I would say be patient, realistic and kind.

What made you feel like, “yes this is something I want in my life?”
Working with clay for me is very mindful and a bit of respite for my brain. Sharing the space with all the other lovely creatives really brings a sense of joy and community.

If you have creative block where do you get inspiration?
This usually happens when I am trimming my pieces, which is my most dreaded part of the process for me. However, after talking to friends within the space, the ideas flow between us and this usually disappears.

Where do you see yourself in the future with this journey?
I have recently challenged myself to create bigger pieces - with the help and guidance of the amazing Neville Tatham, who’s an Associate Artist at the Makerspace. I want to stick with this and create bigger and slightly more sculpted pieces.

Is there another artist/maker that you admire?
I admire every member I see in the Makerspace, as well as all of the Associate Artists and the Co-founders. Everyone adds a unique approach to their art, which brings such a beautiful atmosphere and shared creative collaboration within the space.

Any exciting events/projects/experiences soon?
I’ve got my first ever market stall at the Makerspace Christmas Market in November - which is very exciting!

Why is Colchester Makerspace important to you/your work?
It is important to me because it helps me with my mental health and encourages me to challenge myself without any worry of judgement.

What is your favourite thing about Colchester Makerspace?
Without a doubt it’s the people who make it a creative community filled with love.

Some of Kierans’s pieces will be on display from Friday 8th August in our neighbouring restaurant Patch. His work will be available to buy at the Makerspace Christmas Market on 28th and 29th November.
